How to Use a Wine Glass Polishing Cloth for your Glassware at Home
To begin, make sure your glasses are clean. Many people recommend always hand-washing glassware, while others, like us, use the dishwasher even for our best glasses. It is all up to you. If you use the dishwasher, make sure you use the top shelf glass rack and keep the glasses away from anything else to avoid scratches. Also, air dry the glass because the extreme drying heat will affect the color of the glass over time and is irreversible.
Use a utility cloth, hot water, and a very small quantity of unscented dishwashing soap to wash by hand. Check the bottom of the bowl for red wine stains, as well as the rim for lipstick or other residue. Then, thoroughly rinse your glasses in hot water and lightly dry them with the damping cloth
First Step – Damping
If your glasses are already damp, you don't need to do this step. You can go directly to polishing if you've just washed and semi-dried them with the dampening cloth as described above. If not, dampen the damping cloth with warm water and squeeze firmly to eliminate as much moisture as possible (remember, do not wring.) Wipe the interior and exterior with the damping cloth gently, then proceed on to the polishing stage.
Second Step - Polishing
While it is still damp polish the glass inside and out with the ultra fine polishing cloth. Pick up your glass with one hand and place it immediately beneath the bowl with the damping cloth or utility cloth. Carefully insert a section of the polishing cloth into the bowl (depending on the size of the glass) and polish softly with your other hand.
Wrap the towel around the handle of a wooden or plastic kitchen spoon or utensil if you're having difficulties reaching the bottom of some of the taller glasses such as champagne flutes. Remember that good quality glasses are fragile and should be handled with care.
Continue polishing the inside of the bowl, then the outside, and lastly the stem. Resist the urge to spin the glass by holding it at the base of the stem, as fine glassware is easily broken.
Solving Common Problems:
Streaks! (aaagh!): If your glassware streaks, it's probably because it was too wet before you polished it.
Water sports (why!!): If you find water spots are difficult to remove, it probably means the glass is not damp enough to begin with.
